Smythe's Thirty Questions

There's more to Smythe than meets the eye.

There's more to Smythe than meets the eye.

While I'm working on revisions, I’ll let Captain Guy Smythe take the “Thirty Questions” Challenge. He’s another character who returns book after book.

  1. What did you want to be when you were a kid?  Anything that got me out of my inner-city Miami neighborhood and away from the gangs alive.
  2. How’d you get out? Got in trouble. On my 18th birthday judge gave me an option to go to jail or join the military. I chose Navy to get far, far away.
  3. Which TV character do you relate to most? Never really watched TV. But I did think it would be cool to be James Bond.
  4. Do you like your name? Why? It’s fine. No sense thinking about something you had no control over.
  5. Are you messy or neat? Neat freak. Shipshape order. Or else.
  6. How tall are you?  Six foot.
  7. Beard or no? Short, classic sailor beard.
  8. What is your guilty pleasure? Oreos.
  9. How many Pringles can you eat at once? Whole can. Easy.
  10. Tea or coffee? Coffee. Coffee. Coffee.
  11. Sweet or salty? Sweet. Cookies are my kryptonite.
  12. Favorite drink? Water. I no longer drink alcohol.
  13. Favorite social media? What’s social media?
  14. Who is the last person you kissed? A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell.
  15. Are you an introvert or extrovert? I used to be more extrovert. Until my son died. Then I shut out the world for a while. Now I only let in a select few.
  16. What is your favorite breakfast? Bacon and eggs.
  17. When is your birthday? January 30, an Aquarius.
  18. How do you handle stress? I ignore it.
  19. What’s your most annoying habit? I'm told it’s my minimalist style of talking. Use as few words as possible. Don’t waste time on fluff.
  20. What are you saving money for now? Fixing up my boat.
  21. How would you describe your style? Sailor 101. It’s either my captain’s uniform or khakis and a tee.
  22. What color is your hair? Brown turning grey.
  23. What color socks are you wearing? None. I’m in Key West right now.
  24. What is your dream job? Running my own yacht charter business.
  25. Dogs or cats? Dogs. The only true loyalty you can count on.
  26. Opinion on cigarettes? A crutch for the weak.
  27. What’s your biggest pet peeve?  Lack of order. Disorder is when everything goes to hell.
  28. What childhood experience shaped you the most? Growing up poor, seeing my mother struggle. For every little thing.
  29. Ever been arrested? Yes. Petty, juvenile stuff.
  30. Do you want/have any children? Had one. And lost him. Can’t endure that pain again.
